So what about the future of technology for law firms? One of the most exciting things we think on the horizon for businesses including law firms is this concept of The Internet Of Things or iOT. Internet of things is a relatively new buzz word but certainly something you’ll want to pay attention to in this changing marketplace.
Right now there are about 10 billion devices connected to the internet – mostly workstations and phones and other common IT things – but that’s about to change and the estimate is that there will be more than 50 billion devices by 2020 – that’s astronomical.
Why is this important to law firms?
Firstly from an innovation perspective we’re now seeing the reinvention of just about everything – smart watches, smart glasses, smart refrigerators are all examples of the internet of things. But for the innovative firm we might start to see smart devices that help you in your practice – perhaps a smart pen for dictation or a smart pair of cufflinks that help you track your billable time on a matter. There are literally millions of products ready to be transformed.
There’s also a side of the Internet of Things that includes the sorts of matters you may be handling in the future – with every device connected there will be a whole range of privacy issues not unlike when mobile phones first came out with a camera. We’ll also see that your IT systems will need to transform to handle employees bringing in devices that connect to the corporate network – when the iPhone came out many businesses weren’t prepared for the impact that would have on IT – and that’s just one device. The Internet of Things represents enormous change over the next few years.
We’re really excited about the internet of things and we’re even seeing examples appear every day in our clients businesses so there’s never a dull moment.
Perhaps it all seems a bit futuristic at times but from experience we find that tech trends take hold very quickly and its important to keep your eye on whats coming next so that you are prepared and make appropriate decisions for your firm.
That’s it for this Legal Tech Tips for today – if you have questions about IT we specialise in legal IT services and we’d be glad to speak with you – simply give us a call at 1800-456-694 and we look forward to hearing from you.
